MAD People

It's the people who work in MAD that make a difference, here are just a selection...

Malcolm Auld

Malcolm Auld, Principal

Malcolm is Principal of MAD (so his bio is longer) and is regarded as one of the direct marketing industry's pioneers, with nearly 30 years experience.

At 22 he was National Marketing Manager of TNT, at 24 he started his first marketing consultancy (Feedback Marketing) and at 28 he became the Head of Ogilvy & Mather Direct in Australia and the youngest Ogilvy & Mather board member in the worldwide network.

He has run advertising agencies for Ogilvy & Mather Direct, J. Walter Thompson, EuroRSCG Partnership and has owned Malcolm Auld Direct (MAD) since 1991.

He is also Principal of The Marketing Campus, a specialist marketing publishing and education company and has educated marketing executives in 15 countries. His e‑mail company BuzzMail, was Australia's first specialist e‑mail marketing agency.

Malcolm's book Direct Marketing Made Easy is the largest selling marketing text in Australia.
And his book E‑mail Marketing Made Easy was the first non‑American book on the subject.

His agency(s) have won numerous awards internationally and Malcolm is a major contributor to local marketing education programmes.

For 25 years he has volunteered services to ADMA in both NSW and Victoria, including the State and National Boards, awards judging for 15 years and Chairman of Judges twice.

He has been involved in numerous firsts as the industry has developed locally and brings a wealth of knowledge to help clients with their marketing activities.

Malcolm lives in Manly with his wife and two kids — rather nuclear really.

Paul Anderson

Paul Anderson, Development

Paul started his marketing career 20 years ago with Thomson Holidays in the UK, and promptly got bitten by the travel bug. After a stint of study and time at a fast‑growing printing company (Pindar) Paul arrived in Australia to work with PMP. He then co‑founded a successful market analysis company that worked with brands such as Foxtel, Citibank and Myer. On a return trip to the UK, Paul landed a job managing marketing databases for Lloyds TSB.

But the draw of running his own business was too alluring and in 2000 Paul co‑founded OnlineDM, which fast became a pioneer of e‑marketing solutions and promptly returned to Australia to set up the Sydney office. As well as two degrees and an MBA, Paul brings to MAD extensive marketing knowledge, specialist marketing software skills and global clients.

Paul and his wife live on the northern beaches with their three dogs. At the weekends he can be found surfing or throwing himself off cliffs with his paraglider (no we don't understand it either, but Paul says it's fun).

Lisa Williams

Lisa Williams, Account Manager

Lisa has been with MAD for over two years and brings youth and enthusiasm to the MAD team. Lisa started her marketing career during the internet boom and is an old hand at internet marketing with 8 years under her belt. Her online experience includes brands such as NRMA, Infochoice, RAMS, ING, Citibank and HSBC.

Lisa lives at Brookvale with her husband and a cat.

John Hancock

John Hancock, Strategy Planner

Much has been written about John’s influence on the Australian Direct Marketing industry. He has trained and helped the careers of more copywriters and creative directors in Australia than any other person.

Originally from Texas, John has over 30 years experience in Australia, US, UK and Europe. He has been National Creative Director, Ogilvy & Mather Direct Australia and a Director of Cellarmaster Wines Australia, UK, Europe prior to his semi‑retirement and joining the MAD team.

As well as writing copy, John works with Malcolm Auld as an industry trainer particularly in copywriting skills.

If you really want to know how to solve a problem, ask John, but be prepared for the unexpected.

He lives in Elizabeth Bay with his motorbike and on weekends can be found cruising the back‑roads of regional NSW with his biker mates.

Alistair McAlpine

Alistair McAlpine, Creative

A Creative Director with over 23 years experience in multinational agencies around Australia including; DDB, Rapp Collins, M&C Saatchi Direct and Lintas, Alistair has created ads for dozens of brands such as VW, Kwik Kopy, McDonald's, NRMA, Telstra and more. Like all good artists he's a dab hand at photography, music, illustration and beer consumption.

He lives at Chatswood with his wife, two kids and a cat.

Matt Stone

Matt Stone, Head of Copy

Matt's written thousands of pieces of copy for clients during over 23 years service at multinational advertising agencies, in Australia and the UK. Agencies he's worked in include Rapp Collins, DYR Wunderman and DDB. His words have worked for brands such as McDonald's, Volvo Dealers, St George, NRMA and more.

Matt is also an architecture buff and manages an architecture website.

Matt lives at Willoughby with his wife, one daughter and a cat.

Karl Roper

Karl Roper, Graphic Designer

Karl decided he wanted to become a Graphic Designer when he grew up. After a decade in the industry, following stints in book and magazine publishing, as well as a number of years in advertising, Karl found his way to joining the MAD team. We suspect the fact he gets to work a short walk from home may have had a bit to do with that as well. Although he rarely wears shoes, because his feet are always busted from martial arts classes.

Karl lives in Manly with his wife, two kids & a fat lazy cat named Billy.

George Papadeas

George Papadeas, Web Developer

George is from Generation X or Txt or something just invented. He’s a web designer and likes to spend lots of time looking at computer screens. He helps manage our website and develops games, landing pages, websites, ads and more for MAD and our clients.

Despite living furthest from the agency he’s always first to arrive — and he uses public transport!

Jack Viner

Jack Viner, Web Developer

Jack is a sand groper who was raised on a mining camp in country Kalgoorlie, before moving to Perth. He recently relocated to Manly for the surf (although his girlfriend thinks he moved here for her). He is a web developer with specialist skills in front‑end design and database‑driven websites. Prior to his move to Sydney Jack ran his own web design and development business.

He likes big waves, fast boats, loud speakers, cinema screens, long hair and never leaves home without 2 surfboards, 2 cameras, 2 laptops and his guitar.
